At ArtiZen we specialize in pom-poms and cloud-pruned plants also known as Niwaki. These Asian-influenced topiaries are based on Japanese bonsai shaping techniques where every plant is highly individual and a stylized version of a mature tree in nature.

Bringing individuality to outdoor spaces
The Japanese translation of the word Niwaki is Garden Tree and herein lies the difference to bonsai which are usually table-top trees, grown in small trays or pots and displayed on special plinths or shelves.
Niwaki are most often planted straight into the ground to give scale and impact to your garden design. They also thrive in large pots and will give you that special piece of garden art for decades to come.

Niwaki plants and care
Cloud-Pruned
Cloud-pruned plants are amazing, sculpture-like trees pruned and formed using the ancient Japanese art of Niwaki. Niwaki-style trees and shrubs take many years of dedication and patience to reach the desired look.
Pom-Pom
ArtiZen pom-poms usually have a single trunk with a number of ball-shaped pads at the end of selected branches. The overall impression is that of ping-pong balls on sticks or a bunch of balloons that are not quite touching each other.
Topiary care
Some care is required to help maintain the existing shape, and allow the branches of your ArtiZen plant sculpture to develop to their full, mature potential. Please refer to our care guide for instructions to help you do this.
Experience and dedication
It takes many years of experience and dedication to trim and shape each piece.
At ArtiZen we develop our plants from early beginnings to give you the structure and architecture of a true Niwaki. Most of our trees are between seven and fifteen years old when we offer them for purchase. At that stage they have not reached their fully mature age but are still able to be transported and transplanted without special equipment.
Mature Niwaki are often 20 years or older and just like a good bottle of wine they will become more desirable and collectable the older they get. All you have to do with the plant sculpture we have created for you is to nurture the existing shape and let the branches develop to their full, mature potential.
